Hi! I’m Rukia Hatibu, a creative writer and educator based in Arusha. I work with with schools in the field of STEAM as I continue to share the importance of creativity and self-expression in all areas of learning - but most importantly, I love books! After working with older students, I realized the lack of enthusiasm to read is usually linked to a) not having started at a young age and b) not exposed to exciting books with relatable stories about their world. Understanding that reading builds confidence and imagination, I created Makini Corner, in the hopes of inspiring Swahili speaking readers of all ages to start early, and local writers to express themselves in storytelling. All Makini Corner’s books come in English and Swahili.

Rukia is a 2022 Mandela Washington Fellow and a TEDx Speaker.
